Vertical Farming

2023

Medium:

Digital art work

Dimension:

42.5 H x 44 W, 42H x 42W, 48 H x 24 W

New York City, a place rich in history yet always embracing innovation, serves as the inspiration for this project. By introducing vertical farming between high-rise buildings, the design challenges traditional fish farming systems. The building features a closed-loop ecosystem: it collects rainwater at the top, uses it for fish farming, filters wastewater through vegetation, and recycles the purified water for daily use. Rather than following conventional architectural assembly, the building’s facades are layered and stacked to create a blurred boundary between activity spaces and the city skyline, seamlessly integrating this architectural innovation into the fabric of New York City.

About the Artist

Shengnan Gao, Ying Chen

As an architectural designer, my passion lies in creating innovative architecture within preserved built environments. I challenge traditional typologies through deconstructivism, fostering a dialogue between history and the future. In my past works, I have specialized in proposing unconventional materiality, juxtaposing historical contexts with emerging technologies. My artistic philosophy centers on using architectural design to provoke critical thinking about how rapidly advancing technologies influence people’s needs and responses to space. I am deeply interested in exploring what kinds of spaces will better serve future human activities while preserving the historical and cultural values of humanity.
