Established in 1757, Mangkunegaran is one such princedom that once governed a small area in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. Today, Mangkunegaran's governmental role has shifted to that of cultural preservation and development. The reigning 10th duke, Mangkoenagoro X, envisions Mangkunegaran's future beyond cultural preservation but as the center of a Javanese culture-based economy and a platform for today’s generation to learn, explore, and develop a new kind of cultural wave. This called for a branding effort to build a stronger presence. An identity beyond a royal emblem is needed, as the face of a living entity, continuously growing alongside the society it serves. In the development of this emblem and visual identity, we’re able to preserve this long legacy packaged with a contemporary flair by studying the emblems of prior dukes and breaking down the most prominent visual elements and their significance. Creating a new face that retains familiarity through the profound symbols familiar in Mangkunegaran society.
