“ShanHai-verse” is an immersive exploration of The Classic of Mountains and Seas through painting, sculpture, and video. At its heart, The Shanhai Scroll (8m x 2.2m) uses layered mineral pigments that reveal two parallel realities—an “Outer World” of natural forms and an “Inner World” of totemic codes. Shanhai World expands this vision into a 3D-printed sand table of nearly a thousand components, reconstructing the text’s mythic creatures, mountains, and realms into a coherent cosmic map. A complementary short film, “The Shanhai Scroll: Cultivation Amidst the World,” interweaves the scroll’s imagery with real landscapes, illustrating an Eastern philosophy of seeking inner clarity within, rather than apart from, the everyday world.
By merging traditional culture with advanced art techniques, Lu Renjie propels ancient myth into contemporary dialogue, echoing the exhibition’s theme of transformation and posthuman possibility. “ShanHai-verse” invites viewers to engage with a layered, evolving cosmos—one where ancestral wisdom merges seamlessly with cutting-edge innovation.

About the Artist
Renjie Lu 陆人捷
Lu Renjie (b.1982, Shanghai) is a Chinese multi-disciplinary artist recognized for blending cultural and traditional heritage with contemporary experimentation across ceramics, sculpture, painting, technology, and immersive installations. Mentored by Chen Zhaochi—father of renowned artist Chen Danqing—he developed a practice that unites mythology, ecological reflection, and cutting-edge innovation. Among his signature works are “Feiyi China,” a monumental painting highlighting 1,800 forms of intangible cultural heritage, and “Twelve Beauties,” collected by Jackie Chan and other luminaries.
Lu’s “ShanHai-Verse,” inspired by The Classic of Mountains and Seas, reimagines timeless myths through dynamic multimedia storytelling. Within this universe, “ShanHai World” merges cultural narratives with futuristic aesthetics, intertwining visual art, soundscapes, and interactive elements. By interweaving traditional motifs with advanced methods, Lu explores how cultural legacies can endure and evolve amid rapid transformation.
Exhibited from Shanghai to international stages, he has established himself as a pioneering voice in cross-genre art.
