AERISO: Modular Ultrasonic Cleaning System

June 2025

Medium:

Industrial Designer/ Hardware+Mobile App

Dimension:

5.9 inch x 5.0inch x4.7inch

Slated for a 2027 release, the Modular Ultrasonic Cleaning System redefines safety and ritual in home maintenance. Addressing the chronic industry issues of overheating and electrical leakage, the system introduces a separated modular architecture. By physically isolating the cleaning chamber from the power base, it eliminates water-related electrical risks while enhancing durability and maintenance ease. To ensure stability during intensive use, the power module integrates an active cooling system. Through optimized airflow management, the design achieves a temperature reduction compared to traditional integrated models, fostering long-term reliability. Beyond hardware, the system is elevated by a companion mobile application. Users can access curated cleaning programs for delicate items—such as jewelry and eyewear—preventing material damage through precision settings. Scheduled functions further integrate the device into the smart home ecosystem. The design's form language—characterized by soft transitions and a visually stable silhouette—reflects its core values of clarity and modularity. By merging structural innovation with intelligent digital guidance, the project transforms a technical chore into a safe, sophisticated, and human-centered experience.

About the Artist

Kaiyuan Chen & Xiaoyun Chen

Kaiyuan Chen is an industrial designer specializing in integrated experience design. Guided by a philosophy rooted in human-centricity, Kaiyuan seeks to resolve the tension between technical constraints and user needs. In the development of AERISO, he implemented a modular design strategy that effectively addressed long-standing industry challenges regarding thermal management and waterproofing. By harmonizing multi-material applications and CMF expertise with integrated interactive systems, he delivers a fluid and elevated functional experience to the end user. A juror for the international A' Design Award and founder of JA Design Studio, Kaiyuan's work has earned numerous international accolades over the past year. He is dedicated to amplifying the impact of the design community, focusing on translating human-centered concepts into tangible, high-quality products that enrich the user journey. Xiaoyun Chen is a multidisciplinary designer working at the intersection of human-centered research, industrial design, and emerging technology. With an academic background in Human-Computer Interaction, she brings a rigorous yet empathetic lens to everyday objects and complex systems alike. Her design philosophy — Empathetic Architecture — centers on the belief that good design should reduce friction, build trust, and quietly empower the people who use it. AERISO, her Modular Ultrasonic Cleaning System, embodies this principle: a domestic appliance that addresses the unspoken anxiety around cleaning delicate, high-value everyday items. Through guided modularity and calm, precise feedback, AERISO transforms an overlooked chore into a confident, ritual-like experience. Currently, UX/Product Designer at Roku and founder of JA Design Studio, Xiaoyun works across scales — from enterprise B2B platforms serving thousands of developers to intimate objects designed for a single user's hands. Her independent work has been recognized by MUSE Design Awards and exhibited internationally, including at the Carrousel du Louvre and The Coningsby Gallery, London. She believes the most meaningful designs are those that make people feel capable — not dependent.
