Some wounds never heal, and memorials are the eternal comfort for these persistent scars. Most ordinary architectures focus on functional rationality and structural economy. However, there are some buildings whose significance has transcended the basic use requirements of architecture and economic constraints, aiming to create a powerful spiritual space. This project reflects historical features through architectural design and protects over 30 local historical relics from damage. The overall layout runs through the whole site to build a symbolic experiential space. The triangular main entrance forms a circular path leading to the sunken meditative interior area. Visitors can enter the walking line from each single building to emphasize the inheritance of history. Inside, staggered spaces and light and shadow changes provide clear direction guidance. At the end of the tour, the integration with nature calms people’s minds, returns to reality, and delivers a solemn spatial atmosphere and place memory. The underground memorial space forms a sharp contrast and spatial reversal with the ground scene. The preserved French-style buildings stand for colonial pleasure, while the underground space carries the sufferings of sacrificed workers and records the unforgettable history behind prosperity.
