Interactive Serious Game

This work is an interactive game centered on language and social structure. By creating a virtual environment with multiple languages interwoven, it enables players to experience the differential feedback brought about by language in various situations. The game is divided into two parts: The first part simulates daily communication scenarios, allowing players to feel the communication barriers, psychological pressure, and identity conflicts caused by language differences during the interaction process; the second part enters an idealized space, where language is no longer confined to the existing value system, guiding players to re-understand the cultural significance and diversity of language. During the game, players can switch between different languages to observe how language affects social responses and individual experiences in different contexts. The work emphasizes that the differences in language do not stem from its inherent merits or demerits, but rather from the different values assigned by social structures and power relations. Through this interactive experience, the work invites the audience to reflect on the relationship between language and power, and to re-examine the cultural significance and existence value of dialects.

About the Artist

Fenghan Gao

My practice explores the relationship between language, power, and subjectivity through interactive and experiential media. I approach language not as a neutral tool of communication, but as a system embedded within social structures that assign value, legitimacy, and hierarchy to different forms of expression. These structures shape how individuals are perceived, how they relate to others, and how they understand themselves. This work takes the form of an interactive game that unfolds in two parts. The first part places players within everyday scenarios where language influences interaction and social response, revealing the often invisible pressures, misunderstandings, and emotional tensions that emerge when one’s language does not align with dominant norms. The second part introduces an alternative space in which these hierarchies are destabilized, allowing players to reconsider assumptions about linguistic value and cultural belonging. The work creates shifting perspectives that highlight the fluidity of social positions. By doing so, it emphasizes that the marginalization of dialects is not inherent, but produced through broader systems of power.
