Elements in Flux is a multidisciplinary exhibition hosted at the Peterson House that explores a cross-cultural framework bridging the ancient Chinese philosophy of the Five Phases (Wu Xing) with contemporary concepts of sustainability. Through a diverse presentation of painting, photography, and multimedia works, the exhibition responds to the rapid glacial melting and the transformation of Arctic ecosystems driven by human activity, this project aims to open an artistic, intellectual, and ecological dialogue between Eastern elemental thought and Western environmental science.
Using the Five Phases — the dynamic cycle of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — as a conceptual lens, the exhibition reinterprets climate change through the language of art and design, bridging philosophies by emphasizing shared values such as interconnectedness, circularity, balance, and resilience.
Theme Exploration: Centered on glacier melt, shifts in Arctic ecosystems, and their close ties to human activities—particularly sports reliant on cold environments, like ice hockey.
Ecology & Human Connection: Through the lens of art, explore how climate change affects the future of frozen landscapes and the role human society plays in these changes.
Art Forms: Photography, painting, and multimedia installations
Keywords: Climate change, Arctic ecology, frozen landscapes, sports and the environment
