Dimension:

Memory Monument is an interactive memory game featuring over 100 unique examples of public, contemporary global monuments and memorials. Conceived in response to the United States’ ongoing reckoning with its monument landscape, the project examines the evolving nature of public memory, capturing the tension between nostalgia for the past and anxiety about the future.

As cities grapple with the removal of outdated memorials and the creation of new ones, Memory Monument asks critical questions: Who gets remembered? What histories are prioritized? How does the past inform our collective imagination of the future? By transforming these inquiries into a participatory experience, the work challenges audiences to engage directly with the fluidity of cultural memory.

At its core, Memory Monument reflects the paradox of commemoration—balancing reverence for historical narratives with the recognition that memory itself is ever-changing. The game format echoes the process of remembering and forgetting, emphasizing the impermanence of public symbols. As players match monuments, they confront juxtapositions of time, place, and ideology, drawing connections between industrial-era triumphalism and contemporary debates over representation.

Materially, the project exists both as a physical game and a conceptual framework for public dialogue. It engages with urban space, archival research, and interactive play, inviting participants to reconsider how societies construct, erase, and reinvent collective memory. Memory Monument does not offer answers but instead creates a space where nostalgia and speculation coexist, mirroring the shifting landscapes of history and futurity in public spaces.
