Universe, Earth, Man II

Undated

Medium:

Oil on canvas

Dimension:

48 x 48 in

Universe, Earth, Man II is rooted in the Chinese philosophy of "the unity of nature and man," combining her dual identity as a Guqin musician and visual artist. This piece is a re-creation and development of an earlier work sold in 2023. Liu’s creative process is heavily influenced by musical thinking, with her synesthetic responses often guiding her brushstrokes in a rhythmic manner. The painting explores the balance between humanity and nature through the three tonalities of the Guqin—Heaven, Earth, and Man—transforming these concepts into a vibrant visual language conveyed through color.

By merging traditional philosophy with contemporary reflection, Universe, Earth, Man II invites the audience to contemplate and reconsider humanity’s place in an ever-changing universe. The work poses a reflective question: among the three intertwined energies of Universe, Earth, and Man, what aspect of humanity do we perceive in this moment?

The piece closely aligns with the exhibition's themes of Wanderlust and Nostalgia. It reflects a longing for a simpler, more harmonious existence and a re-examination of human identity in the face of technological transformation. As technology continues to reshape reality, Liu’s art reasserts the ancient connection between humanity and the cosmos, questioning the evolving role of humanity in a post-human world.

About the Artist

Yiting Liu

Yiting Liu is a visual and performing artist with a dual background in painting and Guqin music. Having studied at the Academy of Art University, the New York Academy of Art, and Sotheby’s Institute of Art, she integrates these diverse influences into a multidisciplinary practice that reflects both her heritage and modern sensibilities. Her work bridges traditional Chinese culture with contemporary artistic practices, drawing heavily from pre-Qin literature and Chinese philosophy.

Liu’s artwork is deeply influenced by the literary and aesthetic traditions of the pre-Qin era. By capturing the unique temporality and spatiality within the development of Chinese literature, she seeks to translate these ancient concepts into a visual language. This approach creates a bridge between viewers and history, allowing for a deeper and more direct understanding of authentic traditional culture through non-verbal expression.

In her paintings, Liu translates the harmonious relationship between human experience and the cosmos into a contemporary visual language. Her practice is profoundly influenced by the Guqin, with its three tonalities representing Universe, Earth, and Man. Her synesthetic response to music informs each brushstroke, resonating with the exhibition’s themes of Wanderlust and Nostalgia, reflecting a yearning for a simpler existence amidst the technological evolution of the modern world.
