This series of four paintings shares the same materials and production process, with a similar thematic expression. A key distinction in the aesthetic philosophy of Eastern culture, compared to Western art, is the importance Chinese painting places on conveying poetic literary elegance. These works demonstrate this ethos through the brush, ink, and water, which are not merely tools but are used in a way that reflects a sense of naturalness and spontaneity, while the composition remains meticulously considered. This delicate balance between intentionality and effortlessness is the essence of the Chinese concept of “gongli” (mastery). Zhao Qin’s pursuit of these qualities is evident in the four works. The viewer is drawn into the refined brushwork and evocative sentiments of literati painting, which invoke a deep sense of nostalgia for a bygone era—one that cherished simplicity, humanity, and a sense of cultural heritage.
