Ego Unknown is an innovative UX gaming project that explores non-anthropocentric design by intertwining Freud’s psychoanalytical theory—particularly the concepts of the id, ego, and superego—with Levi R. Bryant’s theories on the self-awareness of non-human entities. The project shifts the narrative perspective away from human-centric views, immersing players in the psychological landscapes of non-human characters: a bee, a sea urchin, and a rock.
At the heart of the project is an exploration of the psychoanalytical dimensions of non-human perspectives, with a specific focus on Freud’s theory of the superego. The game allows players to experience the moral and idealistic standards that non-human characters might strive towards, while navigating the tension between their instinctual desires (id) and their sense of self (ego). By engaging with these stories, players are invited to explore unique, non-human perspectives, challenging the traditional narrative frameworks grounded in human experiences.
Ego Unknown crafts a gameplay environment that is intentionally free from human-centered design and storytelling, creating a fresh lens through which players can rethink their relationship with the non-human world. The game provokes questions about the hierarchy of existence, morality, and identity, fostering empathy for the interconnectedness of all forms of life. By stepping into the roles of a bee, a sea urchin, and a rock, players are encouraged to expand their understanding of consciousness and morality beyond the boundaries of human experience, unlocking new possibilities for narrative design.
