Daydream

2021

Medium:

Oil on Clayboard

Dimension:

18 x 36 in

Cai's work reflects on the complex relationship between humans and the environment through visual storytelling. He focuses on historical moments and contemporary social events, detaching these themes from their temporal origins and placing them into current contexts. This displacement results in visual contradictions that challenge the audience. In Daydream, he poetically represents catastrophic events, crafting a "beautiful lie" that evokes emotional responses and prompts viewers to reflect on the impact of disasters on both individuals and society. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cai explores the stigma and isolation faced by patients and survivors, representing the internal microbiome on the surface of the human body to portray the coexistence of humans and microorganisms.

Contemporary Landscape – Journey Through Streams and Mountains

2017

Medium:

X-ray Digital Collage Printed on Mylar

Dimension:

31.5 x 23.2 x 0.2 in

In this series, Cai combines medical imagery with artistic expression to create a distinctive style. The sudden outbreak of the pandemic altered lives worldwide, leaving physical and psychological scars. Cai's curiosity about life and respect for its fragility is reflected in this work. He explores the diversity of painting materials by collecting over 400 X-ray images from factory workers in Southern China, which he scans, reconfigures, and collages into a landscape reminiscent of the traditional Chinese painting Journey Through Streams and Mountains. These X-ray images, often abandoned by their owners, capture stories of broken bones and respiratory diseases caused by labor-intensive industries that contributed to China's economic growth.

Cai juxtaposes individual sacrifices with grand historical narratives, using traditional Chinese landscape painting not as a mere reproduction of nature, but as a symbolic and philosophical exploration of the human condition. His work critiques environmental destruction and societal inequality, honoring the sacrifices made by the working class. Through this "alienated" landscape, Cai invites the viewer to contemplate the interplay between individual lives, societal progress, and environmental damage.
